THE MUSEUM. The Museu d'Art, is housed in the Episcopal Palace of the old neighborhood of Girona. It is one of the most outstanding buildings in the city, adjoining to the Cathedral, in the plaça dels Apňstols. It is a complex and heterogeneous construction wich has slowly taken shape through time. The first pieces of information gathered about the Palace date from the 10th century, and reveal that this building was owned by Count Borrell. This building has been modified and rebuilt several times. There is documentary evidence that a palace was built in the 12th century. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Throne Room and the towers of the facade and the prison were built, which strengthened the building's appearance, it nouw looked like a fortress. The currently preserved structure corresponds to works made in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. In the 17th century, a side wing connecting the museum with the plaça dels Lledoners was constructed, and, in the 18th century, anew chapel was built and the Romanesque arches belonging to an internal corridor were moved to the facade. The last and most important remodeling works and extensions were carried out between 1977 and 1991 in ordre to adjust the building to the new needs of the current Art Museum. THE COLLECTION.
