THE ARTIST
Antoni Vares i Martinell, filmmaker, poster designer and graphic artist, born in Llagostera in 1909 and settled in Girona in 1920 where he began studying at the School of Fine Arts. In 1927 he traveled to Paris, where he studied graphic arts techniques Industrial Graphique Française. In 1931, back to Girona for military service exposes Paris cartoon characters.
In 1932, returning to Paris, met Fujita, Légger, Rossignol, Vilà de Llagostera and Beltran Masses, among others, establishing contacts with the world of film and theater and intervenes, as an extra in some films of René Clair as À nous la liberté the same year, and 14 juillet the following year. During this period made posters for the Opera Comique , Molin Rouge and Théâtre de la Gaite at Montparnasse, and portraits of artists and posters Grazia del Rio, Brigitte Helm, and Simone Simon.
On the death of his father in 1935, settled permanently in Girona, where he works for publications and posters, combining this activity with the film, its great hobby.
During the Civil War, in 1937, at Xativa, where he was assigned, works as a poster artist and stage designer in a military theater company, and builds on the permits to film documentaries. After the war, in 1940 his work alternating commercial artist with exhibitions of aquatints, watercolors and oils. One year later, is actively involved in cultural and sporting life of Girona, where he made posters for the GEiEG, for orchestras and film coblas and makes reports. On 5 August 1945 he marries Lluïsa Batlle Molar.
With residence in the calle de Albereda and study in the street of San Cristobal, in 1951 made the film Death of the day, written and assistance to the direction of Josep Tarrés, which won the silver medal at the XIV National Film Competition Amateur and the award for best photography at the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya, among other distinctions. The same year he started shooting Children based on the story by Joseph M. Folch i Torres, who also won several awards, including the XVII National Film Contest Amateur.
During the years 1952 and 1953 made several exhibitions of paintings and watercolors, and in 1954 with the collaboration of Lluís Buenaventura films Construcción de un claustro. In 1958 he made his first film in color, Roc, a poetic fantasy script of Vares and helped in the direction of Carles Vivo, film which won the title Paillard, the silver cup and medal copper at best poetic film in the XXI National Film Contest Amateur, copper medal in the Amateur II Film Festival of Barcelona, in 1961, and the TVE Award for best film in 1967 free theme.
Between 1959 and 1960 was responsible for the scenery in the Municipal Theater of Girona, at which time also made playbills of Ballet Festival of Girona Lyceum Academy. In 1960 he filmed at the studio of sculptor Paco Torres Monsó a documentary about the artist.
In the following year established and organized "The film gatherings on Fridays" in the local of AFYC (Photo and Film Association Girona). In 1963 participates in the V Meeting of Prada with the film L'home del sac , specially invited by the organizing committee, film which also served as interpreter Carles Vivo.
In 1964 he began filming The creation of the world through a XI century tapestry of the Cathedral of Girona, film with a screenplay by Vares and Lluís Bonavia, left unfinished for lack of editing and sound. The following year he worked intensely on a screenplay based on the novel Josafat, by Prudenci Bertrana, who had headed Joanot . In April 2006 Gloria Granell published Bertrana i Vares. La Girona de Josafat, which retrieves the unpublished screenplay and preparatory drawings and photographs of the shooting. On March 2, 1966 Antoni Vares died in Girona.
